Biography

Andrew Smith served for 4 years as a radio instructor in the US Navy before completing his BSEE at OSU. After graduation he joined the Pacific Telephone Company and worked his way through the ranks to become General Commercial Manager by 1963. He moved on to the post of assistant Vice President for Operations with Pacific Northwest Bell in 1965 and progressed to President by 1978.

When the Bell system was divested, Mr. Smith became President of US West in 1987 and Executive Vice President in 1989. He has held directorships with more than 12 corporations, notably Tektronix and US Bancorp. His community activities span a wide spectrum from the ¾«¶«Ó°ÊÓ Shakespeare Festival Association through the Nature Conservancy.

He has served as a Regent of the University of Washington, and on the Executive Committee and as a Trustee of the OSU Foundation. Mr. Smith has received many awards, including IEEE's Centennial Medal in 1984, and an OSU Alumni Fellow Award in 1990.
